Work vs Play

Summer at CrossFit Sarasota is always a vibrant time, filled with families and kids hanging out while their parents exercise. It’s not just fun; it’s an opportunity to learn and be inspired. Recently, a member showed up with their little one in tow. When I asked if they were going to work out, the child replied, “Nope. I am going to play out.”

At first, I thought it was just a clever twist of words. But the more I thought about it, the more profound it became.

When you hear the term "workout," what comes to mind? For many, it conjures images of grueling sweat sessions, heavy lifting, and pushing your body to its limits. While these can be rewarding, the term "workout" often carries a connotation of effort, strain, and even obligation. At CrossFit Sarasota, we believe there's a better way to think about exercise: let’s call it a "play out" instead.

The Power of Play

The concept of play is often associated with children, joy, and spontaneity. When we were kids, playing wasn’t something we had to do; it was something we looked forward to. It was fun, liberating, and filled with creativity. Why should it be any different for adults?

Shifting Perspectives

Here are a few reasons why shifting from "workout" to "play out" can transform your fitness experience:

  1. Mental Reframe: The word "play" is inherently positive. It suggests enjoyment and freedom. When you approach your fitness routine with the mindset of playing out, it becomes an activity you look forward to rather than a chore you have to complete.
  2. Creativity and Variety: Play encourages variety and creativity. Instead of sticking to the same routine, playing out invites you to try new movements, activities, and challenges. This keeps things fresh and exciting, preventing the boredom that can come with repetitive workouts.
  3. Stress Reduction: Viewing exercise as play can significantly reduce stress. Instead of focusing on goals, targets, and metrics, you can immerse yourself in the moment, enjoying the process without pressure. This can make a huge difference in your overall well-being.
  4. Social Connection: Play is often a social activity. At CrossFit Sarasota, we emphasize community and camaraderie. When you think of your exercise sessions as play outs, you’re more likely to engage with others, build friendships, and create a supportive environment that enhances your fitness journey.
  5. Sustainable Fitness: The most effective fitness routine is one you can sustain long-term. When exercise feels like play, it’s easier to maintain consistency. You’re more likely to stay active and committed because you’re having fun, not just ticking off a box on your to-do list.
